striped

Photobucket

What I wore yesterday for my first day of NYFW. I was a simple and relaxed type day, took some of the girls over to Samantha Pleets studio for a little sneak peek of her collection that she is debuting tonight as she has a little party. It was really fun, ate cookies and drank tea and got to play dress up in her new beautiful creations. That girl is damn talented, and her studio is so cozy and beautiful. I need to make a point to drop by more often! I have some photos from the visit I will share soon!

So my outfit here consists of some current favorites, have had this black hat for a long long time, thrifted it out on LI and it's been a favorite since. Got this coat pretty recently at my job and it's a dream! So warm and every time I get a hug from someone they pet me like I'm a teddy bear, it's cute. Everything else I also got from my job, this super cool Catherine Malandrino top is one of my favorites, the sleeves kill me! Been loving this Jack BB Dakota striped skirt. All I have been doing recently is wearing stripes it seems.

And now I have to bundle up and get ready to brave the blizzard to go to my friend Amanda Henderson's presentation. It is seriously snowing out right now, the first real snow we have gotten all winter. So excited, but bummed because I want to wear cute shoes, but I know that's not practical!

Amanda Henderson

Photobucket

Come this friday to see my super talented friend Amanda Henderson's first presentation for her knitwear line. I met Amanda when we were both taking the Summer live program at FIT the summer before our senior years of high school. I met her in my sewing class, then ran into her getting off the train on Long Island. She turned out to live in the neighboring town and so we would ride the train together 4 days a week for 3 weeks and became fast friends. We then went to FIT together and I came to see very quickly that Amanda had quite a bit of talent, her illustrations always left me with my jaw on the floor as well. I'm so happy for her, having her first presentation, and she has been getting some good buzz too! So come by and check it out if you can, it will be a great show! RSVP to the show at RSVP@amandahendersonknits.com

sleeves

Photobucket

Give me a shirt with crazy big flowing sleeves and I will take that shirt and make it mine! Dresses too, give them to me! I think in the last 6 months or so I have really expanded on my clothing-with-over-sized-sleeves collection pretty hardcore. And if it some awesome bright color, or some crazy print? SOLD! This top is by Nanette Lepore, not always a favorite of mine, but this top is just too perfect. The color is so striking and the little swiss dots and the sleeves, oy! I paired it with this cute little black vintage pleated skirt I got at work the other day, and of course the shoes I'll never take off my feet, my good ol Rachel Comeys.

Bait

Photobucket

I will let you know, it was actually warm enough today for me to be up on my roof dressed like this to take these photos. No tights and all! I even broke a sweat, cause it is a little bit of a work out setting the timer and then quickly getting in front of the camera to pose and hold, and then do that all over again a bunch of times. It seems to be crazy spring time warm here one day, then frigid the next... but I guess I can't complain. Especially since the most amazing shoes just came into my life this week!

I give you the Rachel Comey Bait semi-boot! The Rachel Comey shoes of my dreams! I have been waiting patiently all my life, well almost all my life, for these babies to be mine. They were always a far off distant dream due to the price tag, but once I started working at Beacon's Closet I knew they were within my grasp! I just had to wait for the right size to come in. And let me tell you, I would have happily taken any style of Comey shoes as long as they fit (something I found harder and harder to come across since their sizing seems to be quite small and narrow as hell!) but these were like my ideal style. The odds were not in my favor, but I must have done a good deed or something to boost my karma levels for this to have happend. I died. I am still dead. But I came back from the grave to rock these shoes.

yellow red and blue

Photobucket

I decided I want to play a bit more with color. What's that you say? "But Emily, you always wear so much color, what on earth are you taking about?!" I know I know, I hear what you're sayin' and I agree, we all know I love to wear color. But I think what I really mean is more color blocking, or more monochromatic dressing, or instead of wearing colorful patterns and prints like I feel I usually do, maybe I'll wear more solids. We will see, this is a little play on that idea with this here outfit. I just recently got a bunch of vintage panty hoes and thigh highs in all the best colors from a buy I did at work. Blue, pink, yellow, peach, green.. the list goes on. Well actually it kind of stops there, but I now have a myriad of colorful things to put on my legs, which is something I don't do often. So I'm excited to see where that will take me on this little style experiment.

dress love

Photobucket

New favorite dress, and if you look closely you can see the little daisy shorts under there that I wear when my skirts of on the shorter side of short. There are two things about this dress that really make me swoon, first off the colors. Sort of unexpected, and also muted yet vibrant at the same time. And wearing this orange/red lipstick sets that of even more so I think. And secondly, the sleeves, I will love any blouse or dress that has a dramatic sleeve. This guy buttons up at the wrist and is full through the rest of it so there is a nice little poof going on. All perfect reasons to wear this dress like every day for the near future.

Tan Camera

Photobucket

My buddy Kimi Selfridge is doing a print giveaway over on her blog Tan Camera! I had the pleasure of shooting with Kimi back in the fall, we went through my closet and picked out outfits and went around my neighborhood snapping away. Kimi shoots on multiple cameras, mostly polaroids, all film, a girl after my own heart. Be sure to stop by her blog to enter, all ya gotta do is follow her on twitter, instagram and facebook and then shoot her an email!

plaid and sparkle

Photobucket

Back up on the roof, looks like this winter is turning out to be just like last winter in that THERE IS NO WINTER. It's been in the 40s all week, I'v been opting to leave my scarf at home most days... what is this?!? I just want one good snow!! But in the meantime, I should be taking advantage of this and getting out there again to take my outfit photos.

So here are some new things from Beacons, a super awesome vintage plaid coat. I have quite a few coats, but none that are short like this it seems, so this was a nice addition to the ranks. And a sparkly silver mini dress, yes please! The lining on this guy is a bit longer than the dress it's self which kinda bugs me, but I'm sure I'll get around to fixing that at some point. Oh and don't forget to check out the hugh clump of cat hair on my sleeve in the second to last photos.. jeeze, this is what my life is these days, covered in cat hair, always.

Natalie Kucken for Ballad Of

Photobucket

I have been entranced lately with the work of Natalie Kucken and these photos of hers for Ballad Of magazine just take the cake. I think we can all get behind the idea of a bunch of young beauties in glitter and pretty dresses, an esthetic that is quite popular in fashion and style culture ever since The Virgin Suicide stole our hearts. It may be a look that is over done at times, but this set really blows me away. They are just the right amount of strange and sad that really takes these from fashion editorial to cinematic beauty. Most of these photos look like stills from a film to me, and the the way they are ever so slightly out of focus make you really want to take them in for just a few moments longer. They look like real moments in time, the next one more beautiful than the last. I implore you to check out more of her work in her portfolio, as well as her blog where you can see monthly photo diary posts where her everyday candid shots can invoke the same sort of dreamy feelings.
