rainy day inspiration

Photobucket

So with hurricane Sandy coming at us with full force, I doubt I will get much blogging in before I leave for tour on Thursday. I have a small round of guest posts lined up for while I am away from my fellow blogging ladies, but you can expect things to be a bit quiet around here for the next two weeks. But as for right now I am sitting in bed with my cat George and a fresh plate of cinnamon rolls scouring the interent and looking at beautiful things.

One beautiful thing that always inspires me is the photos by my best gal Ali Scarpulla. Here are some photos of hers I am sharing from her photo diary Flickr called Free Bliss where you can see how she tries to capture the daily beauty in her life where she is now living in Cleveland. I miss her dearly while she is living over there, but I know I can always count on her to be documenting her life for me to see and still feel a part of. Ali is once again selling prints of her photos in her new shop on etsy. Help a sister out and buy one or a few, her photos are her livelihood and you will be all the more happier having her beautiful haunting images around.

corduroy jumper

Photobucket

Man, a week from yesterday I will be leaving for tour with Twin Sister, I can not believe how damn fast this month went. Now I find myself trying to do all these last minute things like putting the finishing touches on my Halloween costume, queuing up some guests blog posts while I will be gone and of course packing! Ugh, packing is the worst, what do you bring on a trip where a majority of the trip will be traveling from one city to another, and those cities are going from the pacific north west to southern California? And all the while trying not to bring toooooo much, but obviously I want options and even more obviously I love clothes so I want to bring it all! As you can see, I have some things I need to work out in this last week before heading out of town.

But until then I can rely on one thing being the same, and thats the way I have been dressing nearly every day, ha! A jumper with a 70s printed button up layered underneath and some knee socks, same ol' same ol'. All from beacon's except for the knee socks which are from Uniqlo, and the vintage lips pin is from Donnaland.

stripes and a bow

Photobucket

Finally a day off! And it was mostly filled with running errands and junk, feelin' pretty productive. Well, I did sleep in till almost 1, but I never do this. I hardly ever sleep in past 8, my body just wakes me up, oh and my cat George is no help. But I did some running around, got part of my halloween costume, did some food shopping at Trader Joe's in union square, got some toiletries, real cool stuff. And now I am currently sitting in The West cafe writing you this post. I decided to get out of the house for once to do some work, and I quite like it. Drinking a beer at 5:00 while editing my photos, surrounded by other folks on their computers and the lovely smell of BLTs being made. And in a few hours I will be with Liz on the LES getting ready to catch a performance by The Citizens Band! I have wanted to see one of their shows for a long long time now and am bubbling over with excitement that I will finally make that happen in only a few short hours.

And on to my outfit, I am wearing a new to me dress that I just got at work yesterday. Alley had it in her holds bucket, but turned out to be too small for her so it became mine. It was in a bit of a sad shape when it came in, maybe you can see that on each sleeve there are buttons, one is missing on each side. It was also missing a back button so I had to sew different one on and it could use a bit or reinforcing on most of the seams. But isn't it just precious?! The bow at the neck just makes me drool, but luckily there are big pockets to catch it all! And so this dress quickly falls into the category of favorites in my closet, which I have to say by this point is pretty well curated into simply all of them being my favorites. It's a hard life I lead.

shoot

Photobucket

Last week I had a little photo shoot with a new friend of mine named Joel Henderson. We met recently and decided to just do a shoot for fun. I really like the way these turned out, and although it was the end of the night when these were taken and I was getting kinda tired the very last few are some of my favorites. I think I'll have some more to share so be sure to check back!

pumpkin patch

Photobucket

Yesterday I took a little trip out to Long Island with Liz and Emma to do some pumpkin pickin'! We took a train out to my home town and borrowed the car from my mom and drove out to the north fork to Sound ave to partake in some festive fun. It was cool getting to show some friends my town.. I don't think I have ever had any of my brooklyn friends out there, and although my town isn't anything to write home about, it was fun pointing out the little things. We brought my sister along for the fun too, and so we all headed out, stopping at one of my old favorite thrift stores first, and then getting some Checkers for the road cause we were starved hah. And the weather was just absolutely beautiful too, picking pumpkins as the sun was setting in a field that was pretty much to ourselves. Long Island ain't so bad sometimes. To get real in the mood I broke out a new dress of mine, perfect for fall days. My halloween dress I could call it and I paired it with my favorite cape. Best part of the day? Ridding the train back to the city with pumpkins in tow haha, I love this season.

purple rain

Photobucket

I know I call just about everything I wear my favorite, but I gotta say, suede mini skirts are probably right up there at the top these days. I have recently tripled my collection of said skirts and am happy to announce the addition of this purple beauty to the clan. It was actually about a foot longer earlier this morning before I cut it into a mini, another great thing about suede/leather.. no need for hemming! Just a straight steady hand when ya cut and the hem looks just fine.

I thrifted this sweater years and years ago at a salvation army on LI, it's one of those 70s vintage pieces they must have made a lot of because I have seen it several times for sale on etsy, as well as spotting a girl at a party once wearing it too. I love the way vintage clothing is for the most part one of a kind and I'm never gonna run into someone wearing the same thing, but I also love that stuff like that can happen and something you own suddenly turns up everywhere.

the usual

Photobucket

As I was about to start writing this blog post I was waiting for Kimi Selfridge of Tan Camera to come over and have a little shoot with me today. She reached out to me about how she has been working on a long term photo project called "This Is Our Youth" where she uses all film (!!) and tries to put across the feeling of documenting a moment. She has shot with other bloggers for this project using their own wardrobes to style them, and thats exactly what we did! Kimi tore through my closet and put together some pretty funky looks. I love when others can come in and look through my stuff and see all these possibilities I never even thought of. And I love collaborating with other people, especially when it's with a cool chick and consists of just walking around my neighborhood in out of this world outfits taking polaroids. I will be sure to share all the photos once I get them, but for now if you have instagram you can see some of todays looks at mine @emilyrosetheo and Kimi's @tancamera.

But back to todays outfit, I think I'm gonna start to call this look "The Usual". Ya know, knee socks, a jumper, button up shirt.. just the same old look I sport every other day. The only new thing here is this blouse I just picked up from work. I wasn't going to buy anything from work this week, but the other day we were told to go through our hold buckets and either buy it or put it back out on the floor. Ugh, why such stressful choices! So this blouse was an obvious yes, I mean look at that collar! Layering button ups under something else is one of my favorites and when it has some kind of interesting detail like this shape it makes it just that much better.

Oh, and I swear I didn't graffiti my name up on my roof, that was there when I moved in. Just a happy accident I guess!
