dead horse bay

On Long Island there is this amazing place called Dead Horse Bay, a wonderland of glass, some broken, some still standing the test of time, where you can search and pick to your little hearts desire. What used to be an area known for its horse rendering plants (hence the name) is now a wasteland of trash from the turn of the century to the 1930's. After the plants closed, the area was used as a landfill which was capped when full, and then burst in the 50's spewing garbage all over the beach. This is not the plastic garbage of today, this is glass bottles, broken toys, old worn out shoes, lamp fixtures, door knobs.. AMAZING stuff! If you go there at low tide the beach is just covered in glass! Lot are broken, but many to my disbelief look as knew as they did nearly 100 years ago.

I was told about this place by the lovely Francesca and I was beaming with excitement to know this place was on my lil ol' island, and I had no idea! Jeremy and I took a drive out there yesterday for some prime picking, I looked up tide times and everything! As soon as we got there it got a bit cloudy, but the beach was deserted and wondeful! We spent bout half an hour walking up and down the beach taking it all in.

Below are some photos of the day, I was going for a very The Edge of Love look for my trip the the beach. I had really nice curls too, but the damn beach weather made them fall! And at the end are some photos of my loot all washed and ready to do god knows what with. Like I need a whole new set of bottles to place on any clear surface ;) You will see some log cabin maple syrup bottles, some sort of milk glass Pond's containers, a perfume bottle and a nice set of cute brown glass bottles. Can't wait to go back!

What an amazing place! I wish I could go, but I think NM's a little too far for a day trip :/ Awesome loot, though!

Didn't know a place like that existed! You look absolutely lovely and found some really nice stuff, love the brown ones. They look like bottles where they put cough syrup in.
